§ The 7 questions — one on the house

Here's Question #1 — free.
The other 6 unlock in your assessment.

No email required, no signup — read it, use it, share it. If the value of one question is worth using in your next agent conversation, imagine what the other six do.

Free · Question 01 of 07
Are you captive to one carrier, or truly independent across multiple?
What to listen for: If they hesitate, name only one carrier, or say something vague like "I represent several" without listing them — you're talking to a captive agent whose paycheck depends on placing you at their specific carrier, whether or not that carrier is the best fit for your health profile. Independent brokers can name 5+ carriers off the top of their head and will tell you exactly which ones they placed clients with last month.
Locked · Question 02 of 07
“What's your commission on my policy?”
The one question most agents dodge with a rehearsed non-answer. The report tells you exactly what to listen for.
Locked · Question 03 of 07
“Which carriers won't you show me — and why?”
Independent doesn't mean unbiased. This exposes carriers being excluded because commission is too low, not because they're a bad fit.
Locked · Question 04 of 07
“What are my real approval odds — not the marketing rate?”
The gap between quoted premium and issued premium is where most buyers get burned. The report gives you the actual price band.
Locked · Question 05 of 07
“Does the living-benefits rider actually pay for [your specific condition]?”
Every carrier defines "critical illness" differently. Some pay for early-stage cancer; some require metastasis. The report shows exact rider language.
Locked · Question 06 of 07
“What's the ACTUAL underwriting timeline — best case and worst case?”
Agents quote you the best case. The report tells you the realistic 90th-percentile timeline based on your profile.
Locked · Question 07 of 07
“Will you say no if this isn't right for me?”
The single most revealing question in insurance. How the answer is phrased tells you everything.

§ 01

What mortgage protection actually is.

There is a lot of confusion out there — much of it caused by the mailers your lender sent after closing. Here's what's true.

Mortgage protection is a life insurance policy sized to your mortgage. Most of the products in this category are simplified-issue: you answer a health questionnaire, no medical exam, and get an answer in minutes to days rather than weeks. The death benefit is paid to your family, not to your lender — so your spouse decides whether to pay the mortgage off, keep it going, or use the money for something else.

The important part your lender never mentioned: modern mortgage protection policies carry accelerated benefit riders. If you're diagnosed with a qualifying critical, chronic, or terminal illness, you can pull a large portion of the death benefit forward — while you're still alive — and spend it on anything: treatment, mortgage, groceries, a family trip. Traditional term life insurance rarely offers this.

§ 02 · The part most people miss

Living benefits: money in your hands
while you're still here.

Accelerated benefit riders let you access a large portion of your death benefit early, in a lump sum, if a doctor confirms a qualifying diagnosis. No receipts required. You spend it how you want.

01
Critical illness
HEART ATTACK · STROKE · CANCER · MAJOR ORGAN TRANSPLANT · KIDNEY FAILURE

A one-time diagnosis event. The rider pays a lump sum you can use for out-of-pocket treatment costs, second opinions at specialty hospitals, home modifications, or replacing income while you fight.

02
Chronic illness
CAN'T PERFORM 2+ ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING · OR SEVERE COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT

Bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, toileting, continence. If a licensed practitioner certifies you can't do two of these — or you have Alzheimer's or similar cognitive impairment — the rider pays. This is where mortgage protection quietly does the work of long-term care coverage.

03
Terminal illness
MEDICAL PROGNOSIS OF 12–24 MONTHS OR LESS

The one most families end up needing. Pay off the mortgage before you go. Take the trip. Pay for hospice at home instead of a facility. Leave things easier for the people you love than you thought you could.

The industry doesn't tell you this loud enough: access to living benefits varies by carrier, by state, and by rider election. Some carriers include them automatically; some charge for the rider; some don't offer chronic at all in every state. Your report tells you which of the ten carriers actually offer robust living benefits in Indiana.

The Chens — Marcus, Ling, and two kids

MORTGAGE
$198,400
POLICY
$250K · $67/mo

Marcus was 47, ran a three-truck HVAC shop, took out an Ethos simplified-issue policy with the accelerated benefit rider elected. Ling almost talked him out of it. It felt like a lot for something they'd probably never use.

Eighteen months later: stage III pancreatic adenocarcinoma. His doctor said maybe fourteen months. The terminal illness rider paid $187,500 while he was still alive. He and Ling paid off the mortgage in one wire transfer. He didn't work another day. He watched the older one make varsity. He kept a fishing rod in the garage he actually used.

He passed at home in April. There was a remaining $62,500 death benefit that hit Ling's checking account eleven days later. She still has the house. The kids still have their schools.

The Reeves — Dale, Angela, and three kids

MORTGAGE
$211,200
POLICY
None. $58/mo saved.

Same age. Same mortgage balance. Dale was a shift lead at a paper mill, drove a work truck, was going to call the agent. Angela reminded him twice. It was fifty-eight dollars a month.

November 2022: a rollover on I-30. He was 44. The mortgage was $211,000. Angela had $8,400 in checking and no life insurance at all.

Six months later: foreclosure notice. Nine months later: sold at auction for $184,000, twenty-seven under the balance. Angela and the three kids moved in with her mother in Hope. They still live there. The oldest changed high schools twice in one year.

“The gap between the Chens and the Reeves was one afternoon. Not money. Not health. One afternoon and a phone call.”

Know what the carrier sees
before they see it.

Very few applicants know this: you're entitled by federal law to a free copy of your medical and prescription consumer files. Underwriters pull these routinely. Reviewing yours before applying is one of the highest-leverage things you can do.

TrueForge doesn't get paid for telling you this. We just don't want you surprised by something in your own file that could have been resolved.

“The reason this site charges $4.99 for a report isn't to make money off the report. It's to make sure the people who use it are serious enough to act on what it says. I lose sleep over the Reeves families in our stories page. That's why I built this.”
